Final Week of School! Spotlights: Emily and Deacon

Final Week Annoucements and final blog post.

Missing work and grades:
I have spent a lot of time grading and updating missing work. We have had class time to do missing work and get caught up on assignments.  Students were given an updated list today so there should be no question as to what they have missing. It will be their responsibility to turn it in by Wednesday. Grades will be posted - Friday, May 22nd, 4:00 pm (available online through dsd accounts).

Wednesday, May 20th
Market Day: Market Day will be held on Wednesday, May 20th from 1:45-3:15, with set-up beginning at 1:45. Students will need to have all necessary supplies and/or items to sell at school by this date. We will be using our classroom cash economy system for buying and selling. Please do not send any real money to school for this activity. This will be a student-based market, and families will not be allowed to come and participate.  We will be marketing to peers and younger grades.

Thursday, May 21st

Field Day: Grades 3-6 will be 9-11 am. I don't expect kids to get soaked through, but they are kids, so have them plan accordingly. Students are encouraged to wear clothes they are ok to get wet in (no swimsuits) and to bring/wear sunscreen or a hat to use during field day.

Yearbook Signing: We will have an open yearbook signing time on May 21 from 11:00 - 11:30. During this time, students may visit former teachers and find friends from other classes.

Friday, May 22nd

Breakfast in class! Students are invited to an end-of-year breakfast! Muffins, juice, and chocolate milk will be provided.  Students are welcome to bring additional breakfast items for themselves.  (Please store food in disposable containers.)

Thanks so much for all your support this year-it's meant a lot!

April 13th - 17th/Spotlights: Nathan and Eliza

ANNOUNCEMENTS

TESTING: End-of-year testing begins THIS WEEK! Tuesday we will begin our ela RISE test. The following week we will do science, and the week after that we will complete the math portion. Please have your student here! Making up tests is extremely difficult. Not only do we have RISE tests, but there are diagnostics, Acadience, i-Ready. Every day at school is an important day. We are learning important curriculum and/or reviewing items for the end of the year and preparatory for 6th grade.

FIELD TRIP: Island View’s fifth-grade students will be going on our “Davis Goes Green” fieldtrip.  We will be taking a bus to the Weber Basin Water Conservatory, Wasatch Integrated Waste Management District, and the South Davis Sewer District to show students first-hand how their water is cleaned, and their waste managed.  This field trip aligns with our science standards and gives them real world scenarios to help understand the world around them.

Due to the number of students we have, we’ll split the students into two groups:

·       Monday, April 20th: Mahoney and Tooley classes

·       Tuesday, April 21st: Purdie, Crew and Larson classes

We will leave the school at 9:00 am and will return at 1:30 pm.

*Students must wear closed-toe shoes in order to be allowed on the field trip.*

Shoebox State Report instructions

 SHOEBOX STATE REPORT

DUE DATE: MAY 8TH (Students may start to bring in reports beginning May 4th)

What is a State Shoebox Report? A state shoebox (or a box of similar size) is box decorated to contain information and facts about one of our country’s fifty states.

Materials Needed:

  • 1 empty shoebox sized box
  • Non-living materials to decorate your state float.

For example: Construction paper, tissue paper, popsicle sticks, cardboard, toy figures, clay, flowers, ribbon, stickers, etc.

Don’t be afraid to use recycled or repurposed materials. (For example, an empty, clean Pringles can could make a great silo on a farm.)

These items may be 2-dimensional (drawn, photographed, or printed from a computer) and/or 3-dimensional objects hand-made by the student (such as clay fruit or tissue paper flowers), or they may be manufactured (such as plastic fruit or figurines).

You must display the following on the top and/or sides of your box:

            • Display an outline of your state and label the state’s capital with a star.

• State’s name and nickname

• State bird

• State tree

• State flower

• State flag

Pick at least four (4) more from this list:

• Point of interest(s)

• State symbols

• Scenic attractions

• State motto

• State wildlife

• Famous person from state

• State industry

• Geographical landmark (forest, river, landform, etc.)

You may add any additional information about your state that you wish. Be sure to use a variety of materials and remember: You are the designer! PARENTS: Students should do most of the research and work necessary to complete this project, but families are welcome to help and provide support.

OPTIONAL: Some students may want to bring in “tasting” food/treats.  This is fine as long as students approve it ahead of time, it is store bought, and tree nuts are indicated.

*Please pay attention to the grading rubric. Before turning in your project, you should ask yourself:

Did I follow directions?

Is my project neat and factually correct?

Does my project show that I did my absolute best work?

Here are some pictures of my daughter's box that she did in 5th grade.  She did the majority of the work and we only spent about $5 on materials.
