Service Project 2025

During this time of year, we would like to help our students recognize the importance of giving.  For our Holiday Parties on December 19th, instead of just focusing on food, fun and games, we have decided to have students participate in a service project. The Syracuse High Atlas Teen Center is a safe, private space for students who are experiencing homelessness or have other barriers they are facing while in school. Please view the following video to find out about this amazing program.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ww0dcSChhHA&t=242s

We feel we have a wonderful opportunity to help our local youth in need by giving our support, love, and warmth.  For our service project, we will be making no-sew fleece blankets.  We are asking families for donations of fleece fabric already prepared to tie.  Here are the instructions of what we are asking for:

  • A pair of cut and prepared 65-70" wide and 90” long fleece fabric.  (One sheet of fabric for the top, and the other sheet of fabric for the bottom.)  These sheets of fabric can be the same design or can be material that coordinate well together.

Instructions for cutting and preparing fabric:

Place your two fleece fabrics on the floor and line them up together the best you can. Use a rotary cutter, fabric ruler, and mat (or simply use fabric scissors) to cut off any curled ends or edges of the fabric that don’t line up exactly. Cut approximately 1″ wide by 5″ long strips along all sides of the double layer fabric.

If you are interested in donating fabric, please visit our sign-up page https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C094CA5AF28A6F5C16-60777605-2025 There are 25 slots for fabric donations We would like to try to get all of these slots filled in order for all 5th grade class students to participate.  If all the slots are filled, please feel free to still send donations Just email your student’s teacher and let them know that you will be donating That way we will know approximately how many blankets we can plan to make. Donations need to be brought to school by December 18th but students may bring fabric any day prior.

As teachers, we feel it is important for our students to develop a desire to help others.  We appreciate the loving and supportive community here at Island View and hope that, through this service project, our fifth graders will learn the importance of just thata loving and supportive community.

Warm Holiday Wishes,
